. 1991 Schering Calendar |
1991 was the first Schering Calendar to use photographs
by John Wattie. They were 35mm format, chosen from his slide collection by
Schering (NZ) staff.
"Any pictures are acceptable as long as they are not X-rays," said Brent Morgan of Schering. In later years it became obvious New Zealand Scenery was always chosen, with no people or man-made structures, until the drastic change in 2001. These calendars were bigger and used 6x6cm transparencies from a second-hand camera, purchased by John for this Schering project. Financial restraints in 2002 resulted in a return to a small calendar (and a return to landscapes only), but the originals were still on 6x6 or 6x4.5cm Velvia.
Brent Morgan wanted a wall planner with a panorama photograph across the middle, but John said he did not know how to do that. "I am sure you will think of a way," said Brent, and that is how the panorama section of this web site began, using stitched 6x6cm images. John was able to stitch but Theo Koops, the graphic artist, was much better at it. Theo prepared all the panoramas for printing and he later did the calendars too, after some of the printing work on a couple of the years were not up to the standard John wanted.

Kauri DamHuge Kauri logs were difficult to extract from the forest. A common method was dropping the logs into a stream bed so they were carried to the river mouth in a flood. Wire and log booms stopped the Kauri being lost out to sea. Huge log rafts were prepared behind the booms and towed to the saw-mills. Natural floods were not enough and dams were built from Kauri suspended, as here, by wire cables from a boom. |

Maori Track, Waitakere RangesRocks carved in Maori style, probably while the surrounding forest was being cut around the start of last century. The track has since been "closed" to limit DOC responsibility for any accidents which might occur to day walkers. Real trampers ignore these politically correct signs and can still see the carvings on the floor of a stream bed. |

Australian Pelican Pellicanus conspcillatusPelicans rarely show up in New Zealand after crossing the Tasman Sea (they are magnificent fliers). Prehistoric remains show Pelicans bred here once, but not during recorded history. |

Column, Peter Lambert Level, Gardner's Gut Cave.Cave formations of the Waitomo area are described in the cave section. This is a very nice column, photographed using the "painting with light" technique employing multiple flashes from one electronic flash gun. |
