Omarama Pinnacles

There are several places in New Zealand where clay cliffs have been eroded into pinnacles. For example:

  • Omarama Pinnacles
  • Gore Bay: "The Cathedral"
  • Putangirua Pinnacles
  • Rakaia Gorge: Similar erosion pattern, but no pinnacles.

Tarawera Falls

The Tarawera River drains Lake Tarawera.

Lake Tarawera lies at the foot of Mount Tarawera, a volcano which erupted without warning in 1886, killing 153 people.

Rob Roy Glacier

The Rob Roy glacier is in Mt Aspiring National Park. Here a Cold Front is coming over the alps from the west. This was the front which finally broke the 1999 draught in Central Otago, putting out a major grass fire in the process.

Double Cone, Remarkables

The Remarkables are the mountain range to the east of Lake Whakatipu and are a feature of the view from Queenstown, a famous New Zealand tourist town. This is not the scene on a multitude of postcards, for here we see Double Cone from the "back" (East), reached by climbing up from the Remarkables ski field.. Lake Alta is a high lake, frozen in winter, which feeds the stream in the foreground. The rock with many layers is schist.

Waitomo Stream

This is the same stream which runs through the famous "Glow Worm Cave" Here it runs in a canyon carved from limestone. Extensive information and many pictures of Waitomo caves is  available in the cave section.

Waimakariri River

The Waimakariri River is described in the Giant Panorama section. This is the west end of the panorama

This Panorama was on the cover of the 1999 Schering Calendar.
