2001 Schering Calendar |
This was the first Schering Calendar by John Wattie to show man-made structures. The large versions (reached by pressing on the thumb-nails) are up to 800x600 pixels, which fill Windows Screens as "wall-paper". You will have to convert the jpegs to bmp files yourself (right click, set as wall-paper), or else use a program like ACDSee. The originals on the calendar were square, from 6x6cm Velvia transparencies, but cut down here for the web.
Kelburn Cable CarThis is a nearly silent, modern version of the famous Wellington Cable Car. It runs in tunnels and over bridges, from Lambton Key to Carter Observatory, passing Victoria University . The old version was very noisy, had some outside seats, and the brake-man had magnificent levers to pull. This one is more practical but not so much fun. You cannot see the people getting on and off - the 1 minute exposure time blurred them all out. |

Waimate North, Mission stationOne of the first Mission Stations in New Zealand. The small bible to the right was one of the first translated into Maori. I didn't know who the bloke in the picture was (you can't see him until you press for the bigger, 522x500 pixel version). Andrew Morley wrote in the Guest Book the picture is of: "George Augustus Selwyn, Bishop of NZ 1842-67. In fact, he was the first and last Bishop of NZ, as after his translation to Lichfield, there were several new dioceses created." |

Traffic Wardens, KohukohuCommonly around the Hokianga Harbour, shops are built out over the sea. This was a garage (not a wharf as I used to think). The walls and roof decayed, leaving this, which turned out to be the most popular image on the 2001 calendar. The White Faced Herons, discussing if the truck has been parked long enough to deserve a ticket, were originally Australian birds. Their ancestors colonised New Zealand last century, after being blown across the Tasman sea in a storm.(See also Rawene Garage) |
