Schering 2002 Calendar |
Schering decided to show New Zealand Scenery again on their 2002 calendar. Man-made structures (2001) were popular with some, but most Schering customers preferred nature, probably to escape from the towns in which many live. People have never appeared on previous John Wattie calendars, but this year some did and despite several unexpected volunteers, it is dubious if this will happen again!
The originals on this calendar were oblong (6cm x 4.5cm) instead of the previous square images and the calendar was smaller because medical firms in New Zealand, including Schering, have reduced profits, due to the activities of Pharmac. Some people say the previous calendars were too big, so they are happy, but some who frame the pictures are not so impressed.
The large versions (reached by pressing on the thumb-nails) are 800x600 pixels, able to fill Windows SVGA Screens as "wall-paper". You will have to convert the jpegs to bmp files yourself (right click, set as wall-paper), or else use a program like ACDSee.
Rakaia RiverOne of the big rivers responsible for depositing the Canterbury Plains of central South Island. There are two layers of glacial outwash gravel from two separate ice ages. The lower layer is stained yellow by loess, blown in dust storms from the sea bed, exposed by low sea level when water was bound up in world-wide continental ice. |

Anawhata GorgeThe steep walls are made of old rocks ground by an ancient sea, later mixed with larva which undersea volcanoes emitted while forming the Waitakere ranges West of Auckland. A Kauri Dam was erected last century just above this pool but only a few timbers and spikes driven into the rock walls remain. |

Lake MoerakiWestland, in the South Island, has many lovely lakes in the narrow band of land bordering the Southern Alps. The mighty Alpine Fault runs across the mountain faces at the end of the lake. The alps are pushed up from the Pacific Plate (which we are standing on here) as it rides up the Australian Plate. (See tectonics)

Cathedral GroveIn the Waipoua Forest of Northland are the last substantial groves of Kauri trees. The Cathedral Grove is available here in stereo and also as an 800x600 pixel mono version to fill your screen |
||
Shine FallsThis lovely Hawkes Bay waterfall is in Boundary Stream, dropping 58M over a sandstone bluff. It is the highest waterfall in North Island, and one of the best. |
||
Castle HillThis panoramic picture of the limestone outcrop is actually better than the version which was on the 2002 calendar. |
